I am an outdoor enthusiast and enjoy spending my free time backpacking, rock climbing, and alpine skiing. My time spent in the outdoors has taught me to be self-sufficient and to focus on the task at hand, even during high-pressure situations.
My time spent backpacking and fastpacking has allowed me to push myself both mentally and physically. The goals I set for myself can oftentimes be overwhelming. I have learned that by breaking down a seemingly insurmountable objective into small goals that you can easily achieve, you keep yourself motivated and accomplish more than you would imagine.
As a rock climber, I have learned how to give my full attention to a single task, even in demanding situations. Whether I am hanging thousands of feet off the ground on Yosemite's El Capitan or on a single pitch climb in the Red River Gorge, staying focused on the task at hand is critical to staying safe and completing the climb. My ability to stay focused on an assignment under challenging conditions has proved helpful in all aspects of my life.
In skiing, it is essential to be aware of the conditions and the terrain that lies ahead. The consequence of making a mistake can be the difference between an extraordinary outing or a dangerous event. My ability to be sensitive to my environment has proven to be a key skill.
